How long have you been writing?

I started writing books at the age of six.  Make that writing ON books.  On matchbooks to be exact.  Trying to convince my father to give up cigarettes.  He would open up the cover, in preparation of lighting up and there would be a little poem from his daughter saying something like:

When you fill the house with smoke,
It makes me want to cough and choke.
Put down the matches and just think smart
Will you please stop breaking your little girl’s heart?
Thank You!

Did that work?

No.  He had a heart attack at age 39.

Where has writing led you today?

I have one novel “out there” currently titled, “Lullabies & Alibis” – –   the story of a woman who desperately wants a daughter but keeps birthing sons.  I was interviewed about my book and featured in Elle Magazine with a lengthy article filled with misquotes and ugliness. From there a famous So Cal radio station picked up on it and trashed Me and the subject some more.  I had to hire lawyers to deal with a Slander lawsuit.   Eventually I got a phone call from 20/20 television show saying that Barbara Walters was doing a special on the same topic and would I fly to NYC to be a guest on the show?  I declined.

You turned down Barbara Walters?

Yes. Sort of.

You don’t have a lot of sense, do you? Ok, which

five adjectives best describe your personality?

Intuitive, Original, Impatient, Impulsive, (Hey, they all start with vowels!  Let’s see if I can keep that up for the fifth) Outlandish.  Oh and Searching.

Searching is not an Adjective. And doesn’t start

with a vowel.

That’s right.

Why doesn’t this Blog always stay within the

theme of Aging like its title implies?

Alrighty, I’m the one with the bigger font so you

should probably be a bit more respectful.

We’re one and the same person.

That would mean you are talking to yourself.

I’m actually writing to myself, not talking. There is a difference.

I’m still here.  Made ya scroll!  But here’s your reward for being tenacious and observant:

The Truth:  I hesitated sooooooo long accepting Barbara Walter’s offer that a  20/20  Producer called me to announce, “We’ve decided to take the show in a different direction.”   Translation:  You’re finished!

That’s Show Biz!  It’s just as well.  They probably would’ve torn me apart in the editing room much worse than Elle magazine did.

  3. I found your article about your teenage daughters phone tonight. It hit very close to home as I am currently embattled with my own daughter about very similar actions. It’s been a year of tears, stress and Internet blockades. What once was note or at worst a poleriod has become so much more for today’s youth, pushing them deeper and faster into life then we want them to venture. I dont consider myself a unrealistic parent, i know she will have sex someday, I know she will not always make good choices, but I wish i wasn’t so worried today, what will come when shes 16,17 or older. It’s good to read and hear I am not alone. Good Luck! And good job reaching out to the other parents.

    • Thank you so much for finding your way here to comment. I have been really beside myself feeling helpless and also getting a lot of flack for being so “lackadaisical” about her phone or what I call trusting, by Facebook parents who read the article and think it’s all my fault. What is your opinion of this?

      Starting a “Neighbor Watch Program” for Our Kid’s online?? It’s a very rough, preliminary idea I have. We have neighborhood watches for our homes…. Why not online too by banning together and reporting “suspicious” activity to any parent who is on an “I Want To Know!” List? It could be a Facebook page (classified by specific schools) with parents signing up with their child’s name (or who they go by online) and an email address to reach the parent to let them know if you’ve encountered their kid’s name involved in “online things” you’d want to be told about if it were your own child.

      Well at least I don’t feel as helpless if I Try and brainstorm ways to help this issue. And thanks to readers like you chiming in, I also don’t feel quite so alone. Really appreciate the comment!

    • Hi! Thank you and yeah, he did finally stop smoking. In ICU at the hospital. 😦
      I will never forget the films they would show us in the auditorium during 4th-6th grades, filled with horrific black lungs and people who had to talk with that scary box in their larynx from emphysema. They were designed to deter US kids from starting to smoke when we got older, but nobody realized the terror/panic those things instilled in my heart because I had a daddy (whose actions I had ZERO control over) to worry about at home. Anyhow, your blog is terrific and you are more than welcome to blog this, if WordPress lets you do that with About pages? Or just the poem part (with a link to me) if that’s the main thing you want. I think more smokers should be aware of the sleepless nights it causes their young children. And this was WELL before they knew about second-hand smoke. I would have really gone crazy back then because he drove with the windows closed, lighting up over and over. Ugh.
      So glad our paths crossed!

  13. You definitely are a writer. Only a writer would count the number of adjectives that begin with a vowel, then give the line a little twist with a consonant. Too many vowels and you’ve got a gang. Pretty the consonants show up and you have West Side Story.

Don’t know why I didn’t think of that as I talk to myself all the time.
